Fresno’s LGBTQQI & Supportive Allies Town Hall Meeting
1343 East Barstow Avenue, Fresno (Wesley UMC)
(this is not a religiously afflilated event – it is just being hosted at Wesley UMC)
In Barbara Jordan’s Democratic convention speech in 1976 she spoke the now infamous line, “If one citizen is unwilling to participate, all of us are going to suffer.” The more voices we have represented from ALL the valuable areas of our community, the better! If one voice is missing, we are that much less powerful.
We will start the day by discussing recent events in the Marriage Equality movement in Fresno and beyond (including this weekend’s Equality Summit in LA – (attendees from the Valley will offer their report of the summit to those who are interested).
We will discuss local organizing efforts for the LGBT community, as well as, future organizing efforts and needs. We will do this by breaking in to areas of work that has transpired because of Prop 8 and address the needs of these specific areas (Advocacy/Politics/Families/Educational Outreach/Faith/Straight Allies/Marriage Equality) and we will finally, in a Town Hall fashion work to create a Fresno/Clovis/Reedley/Sanger/Selma/Tulare/Visalia/Madera plan of action to help create a sustainable community that can change the social climate towards the LGBT community in the Central Valley and beyond.
I hope this will serve as an opportunity to save time and energy by getting all voices for equality to at least come to a joint meeting and discuss what can we do pro-actively to say we will not be put in a closet, we will continue to do more for equal treatment and we will be an organized force to be reckoned with – this is all possible if we are all willing to come to the table and use our energies for change and if we can all figure out a way to work together.
Some possible questions – What is a thoughtful plan of action around upcoming protest, rallies, boycotts, etc., that don’t wear others out? What is our planned response depending on the verdict of the court? What efforts are currently being organized that need help (Reel Pride, Pride Parade, CCA, IDC, Ellos Latinos, Stonewall Democrats, Fresno Gay Men’s Chorus, GSA Network, etc, etc, etc)? Do we want to again talk about a pride center? etc,? etc.?
If you are a local organization that works with, for, around, etc., the LGBT community in Fresno and would like to have space to offer information about the services/events you provide to our community – please, bring your information to the meeting.
Change DOES NOT happen by itself – Change happens because YOU decide to get involved!
When we Speak, We Shape the World! What shape are you giving?
